Chronic pain uses a purple awareness ribbon. September is Pain Awareness Month. The U.S. National Institutes of Health defines chronic pain as “pain that lasts more than several months (variously defined as 3 to 6 months, but longer than “normal healing”). It’s a very common problem.”

The NIH list outs common types of chronic pain as:
- general chronic pain
- low back pain
- osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis
- headache
- neck pain
- fibromyalgia
- irritable bowel syndrome
