The use of a yellow ribbon is meant to show support for the military and their families. It is also used for missing in action (MIA) and prisoners of war (POW). In the United States, the third Friday in September is used for MIA\/POW Awareness Day<\/a>. The Department of Defense (DOD) has the Defense MIA\/POW Accounting Agency<\/a> whose mission is to provide accounting for missing personnel for their families. Per the DPAA<\/a>, “National POW\/MIA Recognition Day was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Since then, each subsequent president has issued an annual proclamation commemorating the third Friday in September as National POW\/MIA Recognition Day.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For MIA\/POW awareness is about honoring soldiers and that “you are not forgotten”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
