From the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the US, “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)<\/a> is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a \u201cdevelopmental disorder\u201d because symptoms generally appear in the first 2 years of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autism is known as a \u201cspectrum\u201d disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. The United Nations has a World Autism Day<\/a> yearly on April 2nd. The month of April is Autism Awareness Month. The group Autism Speaks promotes “Light It Up Blue<\/a>” on April 2nd which involves “landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world light blue on World Autism Awareness Day (April 2) in recognition of people with autism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different colors have been used to bring awareness to autism. It has been a multi-colored puzzle piece and more recently with the emphasis on the color blue from Autism Speaks. The spectrum of color was a reference to the autism being considered a spectrum disorder. The puzzle piece was a reference to the neurodiversity of autism. The use of a butterfly or infinity has been used as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
