The purple ribbon is used for domestic violence awareness. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). People will wear purple to show support for awareness, remembrance for lost loved ones, and survivors of domestic violence. Check your local area to find out when “Purple Day” occurs for DVAM.
Domestic violence covers multiple different kinds of abuse including child abuse, intimate partner abuse, and elder abuse. Family violence creates a learned habit of abuse called the “cycle of abuse”. Children grow up to bring this abuse into their adult relationships with intimate partner abuse. Adults further continue the abuse into the care of the elderly. The abuse can come in many forms including economic, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse.
Intimate partner abuse includes sexual and physical violence, stalking, battering, and mental aggression. The violence may be by a current or former partner.
Many victims are afraid to report the abuse. In the U.S., violence can be reported at thehotline.org which is the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The phone number to call is 1.800.799.SAFE (7233) or you can chat by texting “START” to 88788.
Ending domestic violence begins with awareness and learning how to stop it before it starts. Veto Violence on the CDC website has prevention information, tools, and training.
The U.S. National Resource Center on Domestic Violence also has resources for awareness and prevention.
The domestic violence awareness ribbon is available on a variety of merchandise that already has a variety of messages. There are also blank purple awareness ribbon merchandise options too.
