Down syndrome awareness uses a blue and yellow awareness ribbon.
Down syndrome is a condition where a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. There are three types of Down Syndrome:
- Trisomy 21 (Most common ~95%),
- Translocation Down syndrome (rare ~3%)
- Mosaic Down syndrome (rare ~2%).
People born with Down Syndrome have different mental and physical features. They have a lower IQ (intelligence level), almond-shaped eyes, flattened face, and are shorter in height compared to their other adults or children.
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The United Nations declared March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day. The third month on the 21st day was chosen as a reference to Trisomy 21. The symbol for Down Syndrome awareness is three arrows referencing Trisomy 21.
