Cultural Diversity Awareness is an appreciation for a person’s many facets including ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical abilities, political beliefs, socio-economic status, religious beliefs, and age.
The orange awareness ribbon is used to show awareness for this cause. The orange ribbon is also used for the cause of Racial Tolerance Awareness.
“World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development” is held annually on May 21st per UNESCO. It celebrates the different world’s cultures and emphasizes the need for discussion as a means for development and peace.
UNESCO provides this description of the day as, “an occasion to promote culture and highlight the significance of its diversity as an agent of inclusion and positive change. It represents an opportunity to celebrate culture’s manifold forms, from the tangible and intangible, to creative industries, to the diversity of cultural expressions, and to reflect on how these contribute to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the social, environmental and economic vectors of sustainable development.“
Cultural Diversity Awareness events also coincide with the UN’s “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” on March 21st each year. It started initially as a human rights day in South Africa to commemorate protestors killed during a peaceful demonstration. Learn more about it at United Nations End Racism Day.
